ITEP Needed for the Short and Long-Term Future

August 7, 2017

The push to develop and deploy next generation dual-turbine engines for Black Hawk and Apache helicopters is continuing with no let up. Recent discussions have shown that building new engines that are designed for the 21st century battlespace cannot wait until new helicopter designs (Future Verticle Lift – FVL – Capability Set 3) go into production – probably not until 2029.

Experts say it might take 30 years to replace the current fleet of over 2,000 Black Hawks and 1,000 Apaches currently in service. With that in mind, the Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP) is pressing ahead to provide the U.S. Military and the American people the best possible value for the best possible performance in its vertical lift fleet.
