Simplicity of T900 Engine

June 28, 2017

The Army’s Alternate Concept Engine program to develop new engines for its Apache and Black Hawk fleets is driving development of the Advanced Turbine Engine Company’s (ATEC) T900 engine. The T900 is a dual turbine engine, which will meet or exceed the DoD’s requirements for its 2,135 Black Hawk and 684 Apache helicopters.

The T900, a dual-spool engine, uses computers to distribute load between the two compressors, and constantly adjusts the load borne by each to optimize performance. This allows the engine to run cooler, reducing wear and tear. In sandy conditions, for example, the rear compressor can turn faster allowing the front compressor to turn more slowly, improving performance and allowing the front compressor to take less of a beating from sand ingestion.
